The Interplay of Writing and Thinking: A Study of Cognitive Development in the Students of Literature

Abstract

This study explores the process of writing as a catalyst for actively giving structure to thinking and how thinking organizes and stabilizes through writing it down. Writing and thinking are so closely linked that they are considered practically twins. The relationship between these two processes is not linear but a recursive process, each fostering the development of the other. Those who are experts in writing are substantive thinkers. Similarly, intense cognitive apprenticeship enhances the quality of writing. Written language has structure, form, and rules, but here, the focus is on structuring thinking through writing, which is more active than reading a passive process. The available research indicates the role of writing for literature students in enhancing cognitive stability. It also encourages vulnerable readers to engage in the deliberate practice of writing as their studies demand to think critically from every perspective, and it requires strong cognition, which is fostered through writing practice. So, this study determines that writing transforms abstract thinking into concrete, conserved, and structured expression. It is, therefore, assumed that writing is a well-stabilizing process. The method used for this study is a mixed-method approach that highlights the impact of literary studies on thinking abilities.
